Feminist Theory

Feminism  is the the theory that women should be equal to men meaning they should have equal pay rights, equal working rights etc. Feminists around the world see the media as a way of making women powerless in the world as they believe men are usually the main character of a film and come across as being the good looking ‘macho’ type.

The academic femist theory first started in 1970 because of women wanting more rights as they felt underpowered by men.  The main theory that is mostly known around the world for feminism is Laura Mulveys male gaze theory which suggest that women ae portrayed in a certain way for males only to look at and not be used as a central character for a film. Feminists see this theory as men showing their power in the media such as making a women be a lower rank in the army with a male actor being the higher officer bossing her around.

Moral Panic

Moral panic is when a group, person or race threaten the social order of a country or place, in the past there have been many cases of this happening, the most earliest case where it startd is most likely when witches were thought to be real and they were often seen as the main problem of everything within a village. Another example is when 9/11 happened in america, muslims became the center of attention and anger of the whole country because a couple of their race commited terrorism. The media are often the main people that start off moral panic or get people to ‘panic’ because they broadcast the problems to the country and get everyone panicking.

The distinct features of moral panic are:

·         Concern - behaviour of a particular group is seen as a threat
·         Volatility - the situation erupts dramatically
·         Hostility - "folk devils" are constructed to create a diversion
·         Consensus - widespread acceptance of this threat
·         Disproportionality - wild exageration of the evidence
